A food stylist a somebody who specializes in making food appear photogenic for advertisements or films. Food stylists take food and use a variety of techniques in order to appeal to audience and make it looks as appetizing as possible. Often times, by the time food stylists are done with the item, it is inedible because of tricks that the stylist used. The food photography industry is not highly regulated, and critics say that food stylists mislead the viewer. Some tricks that stylists used to achieve the best photos are
- using glue instead of milk (stylist can control where the cereal pieces are floating) - motor oil in place of pancake syrup (which often doesn't cooperate) - cardboard in between cake layers (to give it more structure) -spray on deodorant on fruits and vegetables (to make them shiny) Most successful food stylists have a background in the culinary arts. Food styling itself is not a degree that one can earn, however some schools offer individual courses about the topic. Food stylists need to be creative individuals and have knowledge about color theory and photography. A lot of stylists don't have one single employer and do individual contracts with restaurants and businesses when they are available. However, some food stylists are employed by large magazine or publishing companies that have consistently a large number of food photographs that need to be taken. High-end restaurants or bakeries may also have a part-time food stylist that they employ. The average salary varies greatly depending on the situation, but most make between 30-50k a year. This week I finally finished the in class project. I learned a lot about landscape painting by following this tutorial. I also started painting the underpainting for my at home project. I hope that by next week I will have done a good chunk of the at home project- hopefully the sky and part of the mountains.
this week I did a lot of work on the painting. I followed the video and have the underlying colors for the whole scene. The only thing I have left to do is to do some finishing glazes on.
the progress this week was frustrating and I kinda feel like a went backwards. I spent my first workday talking to coach hall, who esentially told me to follow a tutorial to better understand how to paint acrylic landscapes. So, I had to start over and didn't get a lot done this week :(
this week I worked on the sky and drawing out my plan for my landscape painting. I did an underpainting in orange to bring out the blue in the sky. for my portrait, I started working on drawing out the bottom of the picture.Job: Fashion consultant
Job description: A fashion consultant is normally hired for a famous and/or rich person to individually put together outfits for them to give them the best possible public appearance. They help their client decide on flattering styles that best suit their body type and may coordinate with a hair and makeup artist and a designer if they are dressing for a fancy event. They blend the style of the client with event specific dress codes. Examples of people who typically have fashion consultant are celebrities, politicians, and Not every fashion consultant is for rich and influential people though, there are some services available where regular people fill out forms with their measurements and the types of clothing they like online and a consultant will respond with clothing recommendations. Job requirements: many companies require both a high school diploma and a college degree relating to fashion (ex. Fashion marketing). The best schools in the US for fashion related degrees are the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and Pratt institute. However, it is important to note that it is not essential to have a fancy degree to be a fashion consultant. For my heart portion of the project I decided to experiment with landscape painting. One of my favorite parts of living in Salt Lake City was the mountains and the serenity of the whole city. I tried to capture the grandness of the Rockies in this painting. For the head part of the project, I took inspiration from the bitter coldness that is one of Utah's defining features. There is snow on the ground 8 months of the year usually. I tried to capture the feeling of defrosting you get when you step back inside after going skiing.
Made some good progress this week with my highlights. I am choosing to include my reaction to the work each day because I think it is a good measurement of how my attitude towards the project changes. As I begin to add color, It should be interesting to see how the work develops.
This lecture was about the Fabergé company's "gems" such as eggs and their history. The Faberge company was founded in St. Petersburg, Russia and was most notably successful for the intricate and luxurious eggs that they made for the Russian tsars. These treasures cost massive amounts and were coated in expensive jewels such as diamonds. They almost all used precious metals such as gold or platinum in their intricate designs. Alexander III first started the legacy with this company when he asked them to make an Easter gift for his wife. However, this became highly sought after after its initial release and was picked up by other Russian emperors such as those in the Romanov dynasty. The Faberge company also made things other than eggs for the Russian royal family. They made plates of ivory decorated with portraits, for example. They also were famous for their intricately made vases and other art pieces that normally had some kind of painted aspect to them.
